The Ballata Malincolica features some melodic passages and makes the small instrument sing as well as lament. In Pagoda Pentatonica oriental sounds are introduced; this movement explores the exotic echoes of the piccolo, in particular by means of special playing techniques, fourth harmonies and pentatonics. The sparkling Finale Frizzante is a wonderful, virtuoso challenge for the soloist as well as the pianist, and thus a suitable ending to this beautiful homage to the piccolo.
